It is now over a century since Charles Frederick Inston made his mark as a photographer. A pioneer of the hand-held camera, his studies of Liverpool dock and street scenes were at the forefront of a wave of candid photography made possible by technical improvements to both cameras and film.
Sadly, most of Inston's original work has been lost and his reputation has suffered as a result. Hopefully, this book will make his name and achievements more familiar and restore Inston to his rightful place as one of the most important photographers Liverpool has produced.
