Legend has it that the Liver Bird was a mythical bird that once haunted the Liverpool shoreline. According to popular legend, they were a male and female pair, the female looking out to sea (watching for seamen to return home safely) whilst the male looks toward the city (making sure the pubs are open). Popular legend also has it that the birds face away from each other, if they should mate and fly away then the city would cease to exist.
